Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE) continues to increase the support it provides to Canadian Blood Services. Much of the credit goes to current captain Annette Thompson, hired as a firefighter in 2007.

“I’ve donated blood most of my life,” says Annette. “When I joined the team, I started encouraging others to donate. Our line of work gives us a special appreciation for the importance of donating and of registering as an organ donor.

First responders often feel helpless after loading someone into an ambulance. Donating blood is a great way to help.”

In 2013, the first year HRFE participated in the Partners for Life Program, it collected 32 units of whole blood; last year, it collected 317 units. It also organized several events to raise funds and awareness.

“People from across the organization now participate,” says Annette, “not only first responders, but also administrators and support staff. It generates a lot of camaraderie.”

Annette’s parents donated when she was a child. In fact, Canadian Blood Services selected her mother, Jackie Thompson, as an honouree in 2002. Annette started donating as soon as she became eligible.

“Back then, I did it because my parents strongly encouraged me,” says Annette. “Now, I understand just how important it is."
