My story and why donating matters

For someone like me, living with thalassemia major, regular blood transfusions every 21 days since I was 1 year old have been my lifeline and a reminder to be grateful. Growing up with the belief that my life might be short, due to these donations my journey has turned into a celebration of strength and gratitude.

Hello! My name is Niyati, I am 31 years old.

Before moving to Canada in 2019, I earned my master’s degree in India, worked in interpretation, and traveled to 17 countries. I love to travel, I embraced solo travel and travels with family, including a transformative 10-day solo Vipassana meditation retreat in Nashik. Back in India, I also experienced the honour of winning a Japanese speech contest, first in Delhi and then nationwide, which led to a scholarship trip to Japan representing India.

Today, my life in Canada is enriched by countless meaningful experiences. I enjoy PNE summer fairs, spending sunny days at Jericho Beach with playful bunnies, and the delicious vegetarian burgers at Diced Cafe. Oh, did I mention? I am vegetarian and I love animals! Simple pleasures like watching cherry blossoms and enjoying a quiet day at the beach fill my heart with joy. Alongside these personal passions, I care deeply about my community, support various causes, and proudly serve as a board member of the Thalassemia Patient group here. Today, with the support of my family, doctors, and friends, I am able to settle here in Canada. I bought a home, established a career, I am getting married this year and most importantly, have a happy and healthy life in Canada. All these milestones couldn’t have been possible without the blood donations. So a big THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to all of the donors out there.

Your donation not only gives strength and colour to my life, but also makes you a hero to many others in our community.
