In my youth my friend and I were playing in the school yard. It was winter, we were throwing large pieces of ice and watching them break on the ground. My friend let go of one too early and it hit me in the back of the head. I don't remember much as it was about 30 years ago. I do however remember there being a lot of blood, going to the hospital and fainting due to a lack of blood from my head. I recall my parents saying my lips had turned blue. I was too young and I didn't ask but I am sure I needed blood than.
I have now donated 12 times. I probably would be donating more but I get tattoos annually and there is a waiting period of 3 months after getting tattoos.
I am happy to give blood as I know family who have needed to go to the hospital and likely needed blood. Even if it did go to a stranger, I am happy it would go to someone in need. I understand in a crisis like a car crash the need for blood could be immediate and time is precious. I believe my blood type is the kind which can help most people. I hope to continue to donate blood for a long time.
Why I continue to give blood
