Better blood transfusion - Phase two

Building upon our previous initiative (2014, Appendix A) we plan to create educational resources for clinical, laboratory and allied staff on the transport and storage of blood. In addition, we look to dramatically improve our ability to audit laboratory and clinical practices in our institutions. Our objectives for the educational component include: • Provide online education modules to meet identified gaps in current content. • Ensure that educational resources are accessible, improve staff competency and facilitate practices that meet accreditation requirements. We expect to deliver educational resources and online modules on the transportation and storage of blood. Our objectives for the auditing component include:
• Enhance audit performance for reporting to Laboratory Quality Committee and Transfusion Medicine Committee
• Establish an audit schedule for TM Laboratory and Clinical Transfusion practice and increase the number of annual audits
The deliverables of the Auditing component are:
• Improved ability to conduct audits by purchase of handheld devices and database training
• Two Laboratory and two clinical audits
We are committed to continuous improvement in patient safety through education and assessment. We strive to leverage our access to powerful educational tools, and a web-based platform for data acquisition, incorporating iPads for handheld data capture, thereby transforming our ability to educate and audit practice.
