Virtual transfusions competency assessment

Development of a web-enable virtual reality competency assessment for Transfusion medicine. Clinical competence is fundamental to ensure that Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) working in transfusions have the knowledge, skills and understanding to provide high quality and safe patient care. It is an ongoing process, from initial competence assessment to regular re-assessments to keep pace with changes, reduce errors and risk, and improve patient outcomes. This assessment would be a requirement for registration by Internationally Educated MLTs (IEMLT) and MLTs that have not practiced for more than 5 years with Saskatchewan Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (SSMLT). This assessment could also be utilized by MLTs, nursing, physician’s, and other allied healthcare professionals for requirements of annual assessment of competence and/or education throughout Saskatchewan and Canada. SSMLT proposes the innovative clinical competency that would include the following:
• Development of a virtual reality based hands on assessment
• Accessible online
• Orientation/practice prior to the assessment
• Areas of assessment to include but not limited to:
o Pre-transfusions- sample collection/patient identification, product receipt/storage
o Transfusions Testing- Patient/donor testing- group and screen, antibody id, discrepancy
resolution
o Post-transfusions- product preparation and issue
o Patient management - product receipt, patient id, transfusion, and follow-up
• Assessment report
