Logan Boulet’s legacy continues with third annual Green Shirt Day
By sharing his decision to register to be an organ donor with friends and family, he helped save lives after his own death

Today is Green Shirt Day. For the third year Canadians are remembering Logan Boulet and the decision he made to register to donate his organs and tissues, just weeks before a bus crash took his own life. On the anniversary of his death, we celebrate the courageous decision that spurred almost 150,000 other Canadians to register as organ and tissue donors in the weeks that followed his death, a phenomenon that became known as the Logan Boulet Effect.
How to register to be an organ donor
Logan Boulet helped save and improve the lives of six people by registering to become an organ and tissue donor. His decision and story also inspired more than 150,000 other Canadians to register as organ and tissue donors. (Photo by Marla Possberg)
Following the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan on April 6, 2018, Logan succumbed to his injuries, along with 15 of his teammates. Because of his decision to donate his organs and tissues, and because he shared his wishes with his friends and family, Logan’s heart, lungs, liver, both kidneys and both corneas saved or improved the lives of six people.
Here at Canadian Blood Services, the organ and tissues donation and transplantation (OTDT) team helps develop and improve the national system. This work includes a focus on public education and awareness (in collaboration with other provincial donation organizations) to encourage conversations and inspire people to consider organ and tissue donor registration. Every year people across Canada honour Logan’s legacy by wearing green and sharing the message of the powerful impact of organ and tissue donation.
Show your support
We invite all Canadians to show their support for Green Shirt Day and the upcoming annual National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (April 18-24):
- Wear green on April 7 in honour of Logan Boulet and the Logan Boulet Effect.
- Register to become an organ donor. If you are already registered, share your decision with your family and encourage others to register as well.
- Spread the word on social media. Download our digital toolkit and encourage others to become organ and tissue donors by spreading awareness online using the hashtags whenever possible: #GreenShirtDay #TogetherStrong #LoganBouletEffect #OrgansTissuesForLife #CanadasLifeline
Each year, more than 4,400 Canadians are waiting for an organ transplant, and an average of 250 patients die waiting. With your help, we hope to make a lifesaving difference by spreading awareness of organ and tissue donation.
