Sample wording for your will

Your will is an important document that involves thoughtful planning. As you take your time to plan, below is some sample wording you can use to leave a charitable contribution in your will. Thank you for considering leaving a lifesaving gift to Canadian Blood Services.

If you would like assistance or want to speak further about the lifesaving possibilities of your will, contact our philanthropy team.

Here are two simple ways you can place a charitable gift in your will:

Residual Bequest

You can name the residue of your Estate in whole or as a proportion using percentages. The residue is what remains after taxes, debts, expenses and your heirs have received their specific gifts or proportion. An advantage is that as your circumstances change, your will does not have to be altered, as the proportion remains the same.

Sample wording: “I bequeath the residue of my estate (or _______% of the residue of my estate) to Canadian Blood Services.”

Please confirm the address is:
Canadian Blood Services,
1800 Alta Vista Dr.,
Ottawa, ON, K1G 4J5
Attn: Philanthropy Department

Specific Bequest

You may wish to name a specific amount.

Sample wording: “I give $_____________ to support the work of Canadian Blood Services.”

Please confirm the address is:
Canadian Blood Services,
1800 Alta Vista Dr.,
Ottawa, ON, K1G 4J5
Attn: Philanthropy Department

For specific designations:

If you wish to designate to a specific Canadian Blood Services program or location, we recommend the following wording to keep flexibility should that program or location no longer be in existence at the time the bequest is realized:

“If through the passage of time, a designated Canadian Blood Services program is no longer in place, I give permission to alter the terms of my Will to adhere as closely as possible to my original wishes; or in the event that this is not possible, please direct my gift to the area of greatest need.”
