Mississauga, Ontario activates its Sirens for Life to help hospital patients in need.

The Sirens for Life Challenge launch was held on June 29 at the Heartland donor centre in Mississauga, Ontario. The event was attended by Peel Regional Police, Peel Regional Paramedic Services, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services and Oakville Fire and Emergency Service.

Every summer, the Heartland donation centre hosts the annual Sirens for Life challenge to help meet the need of hospital patients during July and August. This year six emergency services agencies participated: Peel Regional Police, Mississauga Fire, Peel Regional Paramedic, Brampton Fire, Oakville Fire and the RCMP. 

The June 29 launch was attended by: Chief Chris McCord, Peel Regional Police, Commander Mike Merko, Peel Regional Paramedic Services, Executive Officer Tracey Martino, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, Chief Bill Boyes, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services and Fire Chief, Brian Durdin, Oakville Fire and Emergency Service.
 
Andy DeRoos, a captain at Fire Station 121 in Mississauga, shared the story of how he has received numerous lifesaving blood transfusions through his treatment for non-hodgkin’s lymphoma (burkitt’s). He expressed his gratitude to blood donors for the role they played saving his life.
 
2018 Sirens for Life was an amazing success with a total of 108 blood donations made from July 1 to Sept 3, 2018.  Kudos to all the emergency services workers involved!
